1978年，楊剛先生考入中央美術學院首屆研究生班，師從劉凌滄、葉淺予、蔣兆和、李可染、盧沉、周思聰等先生，系統學習中西繪畫技藝和繪畫史論。對於藝術創作，他秉承「亦中亦西」創作理念，不存門戶之見、不畫地自限，博涉速寫、工筆重彩、油畫、寫意、實驗水墨、書法諸門類，且能多優。

1974年 作油畫《打靶歸來》，該畫參加1974年全國美展

1975年 國畫《到政治夜校去》參加1975年全國美展

1976年 版畫《陽光燦爛》參加1976年全國美展

1981年 畢業創作《迎親圖》（國畫）獲葉淺予獎金二等獎。同年所作國畫《小憩圖》版中國畫研究院收藏

1982年 國畫《晨》獲北京美術作品三等獎並參加1983年美國四城市巡迴畫展》

1984年 國畫《摔跤手之歌》參加建國三十五周年全國美展，獲北京地區美術甲等獎

1985年 國畫《人物》獲北京地區優秀作品獎

1987年 作國畫《人與駱駝》、《奔》、《人與畜》和《摔跤手》，並被選送瑞士巴塞爾博覽會展覽
