Grand Opening of the new Yan Gallery

On 28th January 2010 Yan Gallery celebrated the opening of its new art space on Hollywood Road, having relocated from its previous premises on Lyndhurst Terrace. It was a star-studded event due to the celebrity pulling power of the director’s son Alex Fong Lik Sun and the designer of the gallery, pop producer Mark Lui Chung-tak.

The multi-talented Mark Lui studied Civil Engineering at Imperial College in London and is now considered Hong Kong’s top composer, working with a range of stars, such as Kelly Chen, Leon Lai and Alex Fong, producing and arranging their music. His interest in designing the interior of the gallery came about through his connection with Alex Fong, who was keen to update and revitalize the image of his father’s gallery. Instead of the ubiquitous white walls and cold interior typical of most galleries, Yan Gallery now has a much warmer and cozier feel to it, with carpeted floors, comfortable sofas and soft lighting. A perfect place to while away an afternoon enjoying Chinese contemporary art in a relaxed environment.

On the opening night pop stars Kelly Chen, Edmond Leung, William So, Rain Li, Andy Hui, Ronald Cheng and Dicky Cheung all dropped by to show their support and were besieged by the paparazzi, who were out in force. However, there were also plenty of artists attending, such as Luo Taisheng, Cao Xiaodong and Zou Wei who were proud to be presenting their new works to the public. The many art lovers and friends of the gallery who also turned up were greeted with glasses of champagne and delicious canapés from Japanese Restaurant Daikyo. It was an entertaining evening full of sparkle and excitement and hopefully the start of an exciting new year for the gallery, which will continue to bring original and beguiling works by Chinese artists to the public.
