Yan Gallery is pleased to announce its next exhibition entitled “Mindscapes”, featuring a collection of oil paintings by Beijing-based artist Liu Wei. This will be Liu’s first exhibition in Hong Kong.
Many artists in China today are searching for new ideas and ways to express themselves. Liu Wei has established his own style by distorting the perspective in his paintings to create a new visual experience.
Many of his paintings viewed from the front look like traditional Chinese ink and wash landscape paintings. However, when you change your stand point and view the painting from the side you will be surprised to find the image of a politician or a celebrity or an erotic scene suddenly come into focus. Liu Wei feels that his feelings towards life are too complex to reveal in a simple image and that he has to revert to distortion using a complex form of perspective to express his innermost emotions.
Liu uses soft tones in his paintings, the oil on the canvas runs like the ink on rice paper, making his works seem light and delicate. Early in his painting career Liu became fascinated with traditional long scroll landscape paintings and many of his works retain the feel of this Chinese art format. Liu builds on his cultural heritage to give us innovative works and a new visual experience.
Liu Wei was born in 1974 in Nantong, Jiangsu Province. In 1996 he graduated from the Fine Art Faculty of the Jiangsu Technical Teacher’s Institute and then went on to do a post graduate course at the China Art Institute in Beijing. He now lives and works as a professional artist in Beijing.
The artist will attend the opening and we are pleased to announce that a catalogue will also be available. Please contact the gallery for further information about the artist or view the exhibition nearer the exhibition date online at www.yangallery.com.
