Yan Gallery is delighted to
present “Scarlet and Black”, an exhibition of recent mixed
media paintings by celebrated Mainland Chinese artist Fang
Xiang.
In this collection
of over fifty paintings, Fang Xiang presents us with his
nostalgic impressions of old Guangdong.
The artist depicts
charming scenes of
traditional southern Chinese houses, gardens and
courtyards. Many of his paintings depict internal and
external views – there are beautiful lush green gardens,
tranquil pavilions, enchanting garden rooms. Decorating the
rooms are beautiful pieces of Ming style furniture, the
scarlet of the lacquer contrasting attractively with the
shiny black of the wood. Chickens, geese, cats and dogs are
masters of these homes, where few people are depicted.
Their presence is merely felt by a book left open on a
daybed or a cup of tea resting on a side table. In this
exhibition Fang Xiang has included some of his black and
white works which dramatically highlight the expertise of
his brushwork.
Fang Xiang’s paintings are
always very peaceful, even contemplative, but at the same
time they are rich in colour and texture. Behind the
apparent tranquility, are glimpses of mystery, drama and
surprise. He depicts the beauty of everyday life and at the
same time reminisces about the fast-vanishing world of rural
China.
Fang Xiang was born in 1967 in
Shantou, Guangdong Province. In 1988 he graduated from the
Traditional Chinese Painting Department of the
Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts. He has held successful
exhibitions in China, Hong Kong, Singapore and in the USA.
In 1999 he won a Silver Medal at the prestigious 9th
National Chinese Fine Arts exhibition and many of his works
are on display in museums throughout China.
