All the books and articles about Zhou Zhuang mention that Yang Ming-Yi was the first artist to discover and capture its unique beauty. Yang Ming-Yi knows Zhou Zhuang intimately and consequently can expertly convey the essential elements of this village – the white walls, the black roofs, the stone bridges, the lakes, rivers, boats and fields. Yang Ming-Yi’s knowledge of woodblock printing, together with his deep feelings for traditional Chinese culture, combine to create his own unique style. He uses colour sparingly, but is particularly skilful at blending light and shade to depict in ink the morning or evening light, the essence of the four seasons, or the charm of some quiet corner of the village – presenting to us his highly individual impressions of Zhou Zhuang.
