“Works by Liu
Wei”
One day,
when I was in middle school in Beijing in the early 1960’s, a magazine was
circulated amongst my schoolmates, on the back cover of which was a
landscape painting. In this painting there was a thick patch of grass in
which a disguised reactionary slogan could be discerned. For several weeks
after this incident, almost everyone in China was searching for reactionary
words and pictures hidden in paintings, even a disguised image of Chiang
Kai-shek was said to have been found.
Liu Wei, is
an artist born in the 1970’s, and he is certainly not linked in any way to
the story mentioned above. However, Liu’s paintings remind me of the
absurdities of the past and because of this my interest in him has grown.
His birth place, the hometown of Fan Zhongyan and Luo Binwang, called
Nantong in Jiangsu, is also the birth place of creative minds and gifted
talents. All of Liu’s paintings look like landscapes, as his style is
inherent of traditional culture. However, when you glance at his works from
the side, you’ll be surprised to find political leaders and legendary stars
hidden in them. The artistic conception of the landscapes conceals the
temperament of the young artist whose innermost feelings are only revealed
by viewing them from a different angle.
Liu has
established his own style by using principles of perspective that are
complex and hard to understand. A specific environment always creates
specific characteristics, just like the cunning of the Chinese people: they
do not tend to express themselves frankly but usually more tongue in cheek,
sometimes when they write there are both positive and negative meanings
contained in the same sentence. Thus, in his landscape picture scrolls, Liu
dwells on sexuality which in China is still a taboo subject. Hero worship
also plays an important role in his work. His criticism of ambitious
heroes, his wishes for harmony, and even his attitude to political events
are all revealed in his paintings. Liu Wei’s pictures are interesting and
they also give us the thrill of making shocking discoveries in them. In
today’s dazzling modern art circle, Liu succeeds in telling his own stories
to an international audience, using a fresh take on Chinese tradition.
