“Oil
Paintings by Lin Yuan”
Lin Yuan’s miniature paintings strike
you at once because of their style and presentation. They are as small as a
palm of a hand and the canvases are mounted onto board, which makes the
paintings smooth and fine. The hardwood frame is hand-made and delicate.
A figure without a head, a hand extending
into the picture, cigarette packets, cans and bottles - all these images
appear in his paintings, as well as the artist himself. These small
details, which at once seem ridiculous and humorous, draw you into his
paintings.
Some of the models depicted in the
paintings are too slim, even undernourished, some are overweight and inert,
they are, however, very real. The conflict the artist feels between the
ridiculous and reality is conveyed subjectively through his miniatures.
We saw Lin Yuan’s paintings in the China
Art Fair, Beijing in 1995. Out of all of the paintings exhibited at the
Fair, his were the only paintings that left a lasting impression. We hope
that by bringing these paintings to Hong Kong we will be able to share this
exciting experience.
