"Shanghai Beauty "

When we talk about Shanghai, we always end up talking about the Shanghainese, and when we talk about the Shanghainese, we end up talking about Shanghai women.  When I think back to the Sixties and Seventies, I remember them with their short bobbed hair and neat blue suits, they were a picture of sweetness and purity.  Nowadays, Shanghai ladies are very fashionable; anything popular in Tokyo, Hong Kong or even Europe soon appears on the streets of Shanghai.

In my imagination the Shanghai women of the Thirties are like the movie stars Zhou Xuan and Hu Die - seductive and alluring.  Some women of that time led colourful lives, others led a more humdrum existence, and some barely struggled to make a living.  But in running their owm lives and demonstrating their independence, they always strived for a better life.

In these paintings my good friend Hu Yongkai depicts the women of Old Shanghai from my dreams and conjures them back to life.

"My Fair Lady"

In Hong Kong the star insignia of Mercedes or the checkerboard design of Louis Vuitton are brand logos that everyone easily recognizes.  Similarly Hu Yongkai’s paintings of women are ubiquitous.  Originals can be found in galleries in Central, prints can be found in framing shops in Wanchai and imitations can be found in Stanley Market.

Foreigners often say that Hu Yongkai is a Chinese Modigliani, along with the slanted shoulders and long thin neck the artist uses ink and line to create his own highly distinctive stylized face, which over time has become like his own brand insignia.

From ancient Chinese murals to the pottery of the Tang Dynasty, from amongst the country girls of Jiangnan to the socialites of old Shanghai, Hu Yongkai has found and created his own Eve.  When compared to Chinese master figure painters, Hu’s women seem fresh and alive; whether from the city or the countryside, virtuous or tainted, these women are all striving to make a better life for themselves.

Through his portrayal of women the artist expresses his own understanding and experience of life and conveys to the viewer a mood of tranquility and beauty.  The popularity of this artist lies in his ability to portray real women with real lives.
