Flooding the Forbidden City
Lianqing was born in Sichuan Province - known in China
as Paradise Province, although life there is actually
tough. Sichuan people are sensitive and tolerant,
but they also appreciate humour and their dialect
reflects this humour. After mastering the skill of
painting Lianqing was destined to become a pop artist.
The fast developing China has its colorful, bright side,
but the background to Lianqing's paintings is grey,
reminding us that there is another world existing.

Traces of Nature
In 1992 Wu Guanzhong and I visited a famous contemporary
art museum in London. Standing amongst the beautiful
Western sculptures, Wu Guanzhong remarked - and it is an
observation that has remained with me until today - that
Wang Huai Qing’s paintings would not look at all out of
place along side these Western masterpieces.

Gang
It is hard to image that Yang Gang started out as an oil
painting student.
In the 1960's, at fine art school, he
studied both Western oil painting as well as traditional Chinese ink
painting. After graduating he concentrated mainly on the latter.
First painting in gong-bi (fine detailed style), and then later in xie-yi
(free-hand style), and also in da xie-yi (almost abstract style), and was
highly successful in all these methods.

Shall
We Dance? Forty years ago in China there were eight yang ban xi
(exemplary stage performances). These original set pieces were not bad;
they were convincingly produced with a pioneering, revolutionary message.
However, later they were misused as means to delude the people and they
became intolerable. Some of my relatives were sent to jail because they
criticized the yang ban xi.

Shen Jingdong’s oil painting series have
no heaviness about them, the composition technique is powerful, you can
feel the quality, and sense the smoothness of his strokes, his colours are
lively and fresh. The figures themselves are doll-like even cartoonish
and easy to like. Viewing Shen Jingdong’s paintings make us think about
our history and make us compare it with our current life experiences,
making us feel happy and bright.
